Beef Cattle
Dairy Cattle

Active Ingredients:

oxytocin (synthetic) 20 USP units/mL.

Chlorbutol 0.5% v/v.
Oxytocin injection, USP (20 USP units/mL)

Oxy-20 NW can be used as an aid in the management of the following conditions in ewes, sows, cows, horses, dogs and cats:

1. To induce labour

2. To accelerate the process of normal parturition

3. Dystocia due to uterine inertia

4. Post-operative contraction of the uterus following caesarian section and the     control of uterine haemorrhage

5. Prolapsed uterus

6. Postpartum evacuation of uterine debris

7. Initiation of lactation following parturition

8. Uncomplicated agalactia in sows

9. Evacuation, debridement and drainage in cases of acute and chronic mastitis

10. Agalactia in heifers and cows with extreme oedema of the udder

Dosage and Administration

For obstetrical use, Oxy-20 NW may be administered by intramuscular, intravenous or subcutaneous injection using a proper aseptic technique. The following dosages are recommended and may be repeated as needed:

Cows and Mares 2.5-5 mL (50-100 oxytocin units)
Sows and Ewes 1.5-2.5 mL (30-50 oxytocin units)
Dogs 0.25-1.5 mL (5-30 oxytocin units)
Cats 0.25-0.50 mL (5-10 oxytocin units)

To stimulate milk let down, Oxy-20 NW may be administered intravenously, intramuscularly or subcutaneously using a proper aseptic technique. The following dosage is recommended and may be repeated as needed:

Cows 0.5-1 mL (10-20 oxytocin units)
Sows 0.25-1 mL (5-20 oxytocin units)

For rapidity of action and maximum effectiveness in mastitis treatment, the intravenous route is recommended. Oxytocin is more effective when administered intravenously as compared to other routes:

Cows 1-2 mL 20-40 oxytocin units

Do not use in early stages of labour where the cervix is not fully relaxed, in presence of a mechanical obstruction (gross fetal deformities, malpresentation) or other factors predisposing to uterine rupture. Do not use in animals with impaired cardiac or renal function.

Cautions: This drug should be administered with caution. For prepartum use, full relaxation of the cervix should be accomplished either naturally or by the administration of estrogens prior to oxytocin therapy. Likewise, it may be desirable in the postpartum period to resensitize the uterus to oxytocin by the administration of estrogens 8-24 hours prior to oxytocin injection therapy. Excessive doses may cause spasm of coronary arteries and high blood pressure.

Warnings: Keep out of reach of children. Milk taken from treated animals during treatment and within 24 hours after the latest treatment must not be used as food. Treated animals must not be
slaughtered for use in food for at least three (3) days following the latest treatment with this drug. This drug is not to be administered to horses that are to be slaughtered for use in food.

When this drug is administered intramuscularly to dairy cattle at a dose of up to 20 USP units (1 mL), no milk withholding time is required.

Store at 4-10°C. Keep from freezing. Protect from light. Refrigerate partially used vials.
